BALL DISAPPEARS…CONT.

Where did the ball go?

Earlier this month, we saw Los Angeles Dodgers third baseman Juan Uribe fall for the old hidden ball trick. But what occurred during Tuesday’s game between the Chicago White Sox and the Kansas City Royals was something different.

With runners on the corners and no outs in the top of the second in a game Chicago led 1-0, Royals pitcher Ervin Santana uncorked a 91 mph inside fastball that got past catcher Salvador Perez and vanished. White Sox first baseman Paul Konerko, who was the base runner on third when the moment happened, wondered what to do. After a second, the six-time All-Star trotted home with a gift run to make it 2-0. So what happened? Santana’s pitch disappeared into signage behind home plate. Perez was charged with a passed ball and the whole situation created quite a bit of confusion. “I never seen anything like that,” Santana said. “I was looking at Salvy and he was looking at me. I was like, `Where’s the ball?’ He’s like, `I don’t know!’ It was hard.” The Pale Hose ended up winning by that same 2-0 margin.
