NEW YORK – Ivan Nova looks like a very promising major league pitcher—especially when he faces the Orioles.

For the second successive time, Nova shut down the Orioles. He allowed just three singles as the New York Yankees beat the Orioles 2-0 before 42,836 at Yankee Stadium on Saturday.

On July 5, he threw his first major league complete game, allowing just three hits in a 3-2 Orioles loss. His second was even more impressive.

Nova (8-4) outdueled Scott Feldman, who was the hard-luck loser, allowing just one run on six hits in seven innings. He struck out five, walked one and hit two batters as he threw 104 pitches.

The Orioles (71-63) slip to fourth place in the American League East as the Yankees (72-63) pass them. Baltimore is eight games over .500 for the first time since July 10. The Orioles have lost four of five on the nine-game road trip to Boston, New York and Cleveland.

Brett Gardner led off the first with a double. With one out, he scored on Robinson Cano’s double off Feldman (4-4).

New York had runners on in every inning but the second against Feldman. In the fifth with runners on first and third and out one, Brian Roberts started a nifty 4-6-3 double play on Derek Jeter’s grounder to get out of the inning.

The Orioles had multiple runners on only in the second. Nova hit Adam Jones with a pitch. Matt Wieters singled, but Nick Markakis grounded into a double play.

Nova hit Chris Davis in the fourth and Manny Machado singled in the sixth. J.J. Hardy walked to lead off the eighth, but Wilson Betemit hit into a double play.

Nate McLouth opened the ninth by bouncing a ball off Nova’s glove. He took a few moments to find it, but Nova’s throw to first baseman Lyle Overbay was wide, and McLouth was given the Orioles’ third hit. Machado flied to left, Davis flied to right

Feldman walked one, struck out five and hit two batters in seven.

Troy Patton allowed a homer to Cano leading off the eighth, his 25th.

NOTES: Manager Buck Showalter said the Orioles would add at least one player from Norfolk for Sunday’s game.

-Wei-Yin Chen (7-7, 3.76) faces Andy Pettitte (10-9, 4.05) on Sunday.

-Kevin Gausman made his first appearance since July 9. He retired all three batters he faced.
