The Jon Lester Sweeps is heating up, with a decision expected in the next week.
Lester is the most saught after left-handed thrower in this years free agency. The rest of the starters on the market are waiting to see where Lester lands. Lester is expected to sign a deal for at least six years and more than $20 million annually. Three teams — the Cubs, Red Sox and Giants — are serious contenders for Lester, and other clubs have expressed interest as well.
Lester, a nine-year veteran, is a free agent at the right time. Lester had a very good season in 2014, posting the best ERA, FIP and walk rates of his career. He has also thrown at least 190 innings every year for seven-straight seasons, though his workload and age do make him a risky proposition on a lucrative, long-term deal.
Any sA team that is not able to land Lester is likely to turn to an alternative, with Max Scherzer andJames Shields, other big names in free agency. Cole Hammels might be available for the right price on the trade market. For now, the focus is on Lester.
