The Red Sox are still trying to add to their pitching rotation, and if they’re looking to land Phillies’ lefty Cole Hamels to give them an ace. It has been reported that including Joe Kelly in a trade with Philadelphia could be a way to make it happen.
In the aftermath of the Lester signing with the Cubs, the Sox went out and filled their rotation with Wade Miley, Rick Porcello and Justin Masterson to go with Kelly and Clay Buchholz. None of those would qualify as an ace and Hamels has reportedly been on the Sox’ radar as a Lester replacement since the summer.
Kelly, the 26-year-old right-hander acquired from the Cardinals in the Jon Lackey deal last summer, went 4-2 with a 4.11 ERA in 10 starts for Boston.
