New York Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez will not try to work out a settlement with Major League Baseball, according to USA TODAY Sports, one day after Milwaukee Brewers star Ryan Braun was suspended for the rest of the season for taking performance-enhancing drugs.

Rodriguez could be banned for at least 100 games by MLB for his role in the Biogenesis scandal and for hindering the investigation, according to a source, but he would appeal any suspension.

In the USA TODAY Sports story, people close to Rodriguez said that he does not see the Braun case as being similar to his own, but MLB officials are pursuing a stiffer penalty for him because of his past admission that he used steroids.

If Rodriguez were suspended at least 100 games, he would lose a substantial amount of money — about $14 million in salary this year and $7 million in 2014.

Rodriguez has not played this season following January hip surgery but he seemed on the verge of joining the Yankees this week. He instead was sent to the team’s facility in Tampa while a strained quadriceps heals, a move that reportedly angered the 37-year-old former MVP.

According to sources, Rodriguez is convinced that the Yankees want to keep him off the field. The team disputes that. “We do want him back,” team president Randy Levine told USA TODAY Sports last week. “We just want to make sure that when he comes back, he stays healthy.”

Meanwhile, Rodriguez’s manager, Joe Girardi, expressed frustration over the lingering PED controversy. “I’m tired of the steroids,” he said. “I’m just tired of it. Just do things right, bottom line. Everyone should do things the right way, but that’s not the world we live in.”
