David Wright, on pace for weak season, says Mets bats are cold June 17th, 2014 2:35 pm
David Wright hit a single in the eighth inning Tuesday, giving him just three hits in his last 53 plate appearances, spanning 13 games, during which the Mets are 3-10.
He is on pace to hit around.260 this season, with a .320 OBP, 10 HR and 75 RBI.
Wright only said, “No,” when asked if anything was physically hindering his performance (ESPN, June 17).
“You look at their lineup, top to bottom they have a good lineup,” Wright said about the Cardinals, who beat his Mets late Monday night. “You can’t have Murphy, or Granderson, or whoever, kind of be the only guy, or two guys, in our lineup to be successful. You’ve got to have a strong lineup in case you do have one, two, three guys that kind of get cold and go through the inevitable ups and downs of a season. You need from top to bottom to be able to lengthen a lineup out. Lately, we just have too many guys cold at the same time.”

Oh, David, if only that was the problem. I’m sorry to break it to you, but many of the people in the lineup with you will always be ‘cold,’ because they’re not good hitters. I don’t think Chris Young‘s problem is a batting slump. I think his problem is that he’s 30 years old and not that good any more. Is Lucas Duda in a slump? Or, at 28, is this the best he’ll ever be? Taylor Teagarden isn’t slumping, he’s playing at the wrong level. He should be in Triple-A, just like Matt den Dekker. And, please, don’t get me started on Ruben Tejada…
I know you know this, you just can’t say it. It’s not fair to your teammates, who are what they are. I respect that. You’re a good teammate. However, while I know you don’t like to pick up the phone and call Sandy Alderson, the next time he asks how things are going, tell him you’d like more talented hitters with you in the lineup.
